🍞 Charred sourdough at Bogard and Ashe

Vern's

At 41 Bogard Street, Vern's is Daniel and Bethany Heinze's neighborhood restaurant at Bogard and Ashe. They opened it in 2022 after returning to Charleston from five years in Los Angeles, with Daniel leading the kitchen and Bethany shaping the wine list.

The menu changes often, while a chalkboard carries small runs of whatever excites the kitchen. Candlelight, wood floors, and walk-in bar seats keep the room homey. Start with the charred sourdough and allium butter.

🏥 $1B MUSC Cancer Hospital Goes Before Design Board

🏥 $1B MUSC Cancer Hospital Goes Before Design Board

The Gist: MUSC plans a $1 billion, 14-story cancer hospital at Ashley Avenue and Calhoun Street. The 600,000-square-foot building would hold 100 inpatient rooms, 124 exam rooms, 14 operating rooms and 94 infusion chairs.

Why It Matters: It would be South Carolina's first cancer-only hospital, bringing care now scattered across MUSC's downtown campus into one building.

What's Next: Charleston's Board of Architectural Review meets at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Gaillard Center. MUSC expects completion in 2030.

🚒 $11M Bond Would Rebuild James Island Fire Station

The Gist: Charleston County is considering an ordinance allowing the James Island Public Service District to borrow $11 million. Plans include replacing 1982-era Fire Station Four for about $9.5 million and building a $1.5 million vegetative-debris yard for post-storm cleanup.

Why It Matters: The new station would sit above the floodplain, while the debris site could shorten cleanup runs after hurricanes. Leaders say current taxes would not rise.

What's Next: County Council must approve the ordinance before the district can issue bonds and choose contractors.
