๐ฟ Why Does Your Lawn Treatment Still Leave You With Weeds?
You pay for lawn care, the truck shows up on schedule, and the weeds are still there. According to Happy Hour Lawn Treatment, part of the problem may be a one-size-fits-all approach that applies the same products to every yard, regardless of what it actually needs.
The family-owned company is new to the industry in Charleston, serving areas including Mount Pleasant and James Island. Owner Austin Solaguren spent about four and a half years running a landscaping company before shifting his focus exclusively to lawn treatment. His approach takes cues from golf course maintenance, combining fertilization, weed control, insect control, and disease control based on what each lawn needs.
Billing is monthly, and visits are scheduled according to your lawn's needs rather than a fixed routine.

๐ณ๏ธ Half-cent transportation tax goes to Charleston County voters
The Gist: Charleston County voters will decide whether to continue the half-cent transportation sales tax for up to 25 years. The proposal includes a flyover at the Rivers Avenue rail crossing in North Charleston, plus funding for roads, sidewalks, flooding work and buses.
Why It Matters: Neighbors say trains block school drop-offs and emergency vehicles at the Rivers Avenue crossing.
What's Next: Early voting is underway ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Why It Matters: The plants and fencing are meant to hold newly placed sand in place and slow erosion along the island's shoreline.

๐ง Charleston commission picks child care as its 2027 focus
The Gist: Charleston has relaunched its Commission on Women with affordable child care as its 2027 topic. Councilmember Leslie Skardon chairs the group, which includes city staff, the College of Charleston and local organizations.
Why It Matters: Skardon says long day care waitlists and costs leave Charleston parents struggling to keep full-time jobs and cover basic bills.
What's Next: The commission plans to develop one policy proposal for the mayor and City Council to consider.

๐ธ Charleston plans wider King and Grove school crosswalks
The Gist: Charleston plans to repaint and widen crosswalks at King and Grove streets and add signs this week. The work follows years of warnings from James Simons Montessori parents and a student being hit while walking to school earlier this month.
Why It Matters: Parents have been helping children across the intersection themselves during morning drop-off.
What's Next: The city expects final designs for longer-term changes by mid-December; SCDOT must approve them.
